Individuals who have a valid authorized need to access DoD Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)- protected information but do not have access to a government site or government-furnished equipment will need to configure their systems to access PKI-protected content.
Manually installing root certificate on Mac OSX. NOTE: The following is based on OSX Yosemite 10.10.5. Other OS versions will have similar settings but they may not be worded the same or may be in slightly different places. Login to the web admin and click the Download Root Certificate button under Apps SSL Inspector Settings. InstallRoot Tool. The InstallRoot application is the simplest and most straightforward way to install all DOD certificates in your windows operating system, and supports Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, and Java. Select your corresponding computer architecture type from the links below: (NIPR Windows Installer, for SIPR certificates access DISA's site directly from a SIPR machine). If the installation is successful, you'll be presented with a 'The installation was successful' message with the executable window. To verify that the 2034 SSL Certificate has been installed successfully, you can navigate to ' Keychain Access' and look within the 'System Keychain' Folder for Securly SSL Certificate. Firstly, get the root certificate. Then follow the steps below: Procedures: Double click the certificate file (with '.cer' extension) Choose 'System' from the keychain option.Then press 'OK'When the following window pops-up, click the 'Always Trust' button.Then you.
Accessing DoD PKI-protected information is most commonly achieved using the PKI certificates stored on your Common Access Card (CAC). The certificates on your CAC can allow you to perform routine activities such as accessing OWA, signing documents, and viewing other PKI-protected information online. For more information about your CAC and the information stored on it, visit http://www.cac.mil.
Before you begin, make sure you know your organization’s policies regarding remote use.
Windows
To get started you will need:
- CAC
- Card reader
- Middleware (if necessary, depending on your operating system version)
You can get started using your CAC by following these basic steps:
- Get a card reader.
At this time, the best advice for obtaining a card reader is to work with your home component to get one. In addition, please review the DoD CAC Reader Specifications for more information regarding the requirements for a card reader. - Install middleware, if necessary.
You may need additional middleware, depending on the operating system you use. Please contact your CC/S/A for more information on the middleware requirements for your organization. You can find their contact information on our Contact Us tab. - Install DoD root certificates with InstallRoot (32-bit, 64-bit or Non Administrator).
In order for your machine to recognize your CAC certificates and DoD websites as trusted, run the InstallRoot utility (32-bit, 64-bit or Non Administrator) to install the DoD CA certificates on Microsoft operating systems. If you’re running an alternate operating system such as Mac OS or Linux, you can import certificates from the PKCS 7 bundle. The InstallRoot User Guide is available here. - Make certificates available to your operating system and/or browser, if necessary.

Mac
To get started you will need:
- CAC (see note below)
- Card reader
You can get started using your CAC on your Mac OS X system by following these basic steps:
- Get a card reader
Typically Macs do not come with card readers and therefore an external card reader is necessary. At this time, the best advice for obtaining a card reader is through working with your home component. In addition, please review the DoD CAC Reader Specifications for more information regarding card reader requirements. - Download and install the OS X Smartcard Services package
The OS X Smartcard Services Package allows a Mac to read and communicate with a smart card. In order for your machine to recognize your CAC certificates and DoD websites as trusted, the installer will load the DoD CA certificates on OS X. Please refer to this page for specific installation instructions. - Address the cross-certificate chaining Issue
These instructions walk through adjusting the trust settings on the Interoperability Root CA (IRCA) > DoD Root CA 2 and the US DoD CCEB IRCA 1 > DoD Root CA 2 certificates to prevent cross-certificate chaining issues. This can make it appear that your certificates are issued by roots other than the DoD Root CA 2 and can prevent access to DoD websites. - Configure Chrome and Safari, if necessary
Safari and Google Chrome rely on Keychain Access properly recognizing your CAC certificates.- In Finder, navigate to Go > Utilities and launch KeychainAccess.app
- Verify that your CAC certificates are recognized and displayed in Keychain Access
Note: CACs are currently made of different kinds of card stock. To determine what card stock you have, look at the back of your CAC above the magnetic strip. Most CACs are supported by the Smartcard Services package, however Oberthur ID One 128 v5.5 CACs are not. Third party middleware is available that will support these CACS; two such options are Thursby Software’s PKard and Centrify’s Express for Smart Card.
Linux
To get started you will need:
- CAC
- Card reader
- Middleware
You can get started using your CAC with Firefox on Linux machines by following these basic steps:
- Get a card reader.
At this time, the best advice for obtaining a card reader is to work with your home component to get one. In addition, please review the DoD CAC Reader Specifications for more information regarding the requirements for a card reader. - Obtain middleware.
You will need middleware for Linux to communicate with the CAC. The CoolKey PKCS#11 module provides access to the CAC and can be installed using Linux package management commands.- For Debian-based distributions, use the command apt-get install coolkey
- For Fedora-based distributions, use the command yum install coolkey. The CoolKey PKCS #11 module version 1.1.0 release 15 ships with RHEL 5.7 and above and is located at /usr/lib/pkcs11/libcoolkeypk11.so.
If you prefer to build CoolKey from source, instructions are included in the Configuring Firefox for the CAC guide. - Configure Firefox to trust the DoD PKI and use the CAC.
To configure Firefox to communicate with the CAC, follow these steps to install the DoD root and intermediate CA certificates into the Firefox NSS trust store, load the CoolKey library, and ensure the Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) is being used to perform revocation checking.

This is a beginner guide that is designed to save yourself a headache and valuable time if you decide to install R yourself.

R is one of the main languages used for data science today. As such, it is natural that any beginner may want to know how to get started with this powerful language regardless of the operating system running on a computer. Thus, this tutorial will address this by covering the installation process of R on Windows 10, Mac OSX, and Ubuntu Linux.
Furthermore, it will also go over the installation of RStudio, which is an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) that makes R easier to use as well as how to install R packages such as dplyr or ggplot2.
Installing R on Windows 10
Installing R on Windows 10 is very straightforward. The easiest way is to install it through CRAN, which stands for The Comprehensive R Archive Network. Just visit the CRAN downloads page and follow the links as shown in the video below:
Install Root For Mac
Once the download is finished, you will obtain a file named 'R-3.6.3-win.exe' or similar depending on the version of R that you download. The links shown in the video above will take you to the most recent version. To finish installing R on your computer, all that is left to do is to run the .exe file. Most of the time, you will likely want to go with the defaults, so click the button 'Next' until the process is complete, as shown in the video below. Note that, even though I do not do so, you can add desktop or quick start shortcuts during the process.
Installing RStudio
Once R is installed, you can proceed to install the RStudio IDE to have a much-improved environment to work in your R scripts. It includes a console that supports direct code execution and tools for plotting and keeping track of your variables in the workspace, among other features. The installation process is very straightforward, as well. Simply go to the RStudio downloads page and follow the video below:
Once the download is complete, you will get a file named 'RStudio-1.2.5033.exe' or similar. Again this will be dependent on the version. To complete the installation, it is as easy as before. Just run the previously mentioned .exe file with the default settings by clicking 'Next', and wait until the installation finishes. Bear in mind that RStudio requires that R is installed beforehand.
Installing Packages in R
Now you have base R installed on your system and a nice IDE to begin your R programming journey. However, base R is rather limited in the things that it can do, which is why we have R packages such as dplyr for enhanced,'ggplot2'))
The second is shown in the video below. It is an easy-to-use graphical interface built into RStudio from which you can search and download any R package available on CRAN.
Installing R on Mac OSX
Installing R on Mac OS is similar to Windows. Once again, The easiest way is to install it through CRAN by going to the CRAN downloads page and following the links as shown in the video below:
The next step is to click on the 'R-3.6.2.pkg' (or newer version) file to begin the installation. You can leave the default options as is just like for Windows.
Installing RStudio and R packages
This process is essentially the same as in Windows. To download RStudio, go to the RStudio downloads page and get the .dmg for Mac OS, as shown in the image below. Remember to keep default installation options.
Once you open RStudio, installing packages is the same as with Windows. You can use either
install.packages(c('dplyr','ggplot2'))
in the console or go ahead and use the graphical interface shown in the video under the installing packages in R subsection of this tutorial.Installing R on Ubuntu 19.04/18.04/16.04
Installing R on Ubuntu maybe a little bit more tricky for those unused to working in the command line. However, it is perhaps just as easy as with Windows or Mac OS. Before you start, make sure to have root access in order to use sudo.
As it is common, prior to installing R, let us update the system package index and upgrade all our installed packages using the following two commands:
sudo apt update
sudo apt -y upgrade
After that, all that you have to do is run the following in the command line to install base R.
sudo apt -y install r-base
Installing RStudio and R Packages
Once base R is installed, you can go ahead and install RStudio. For that we are going to head over again to the RStudio downloads page and download the .deb file for our Ubuntu version as shown in the image below:
Mac Os Enable Root
Once you have the .deb file, all that is left is to navigate to your downloads folder using
cd Downloads
in the command line and then run the following command to begin the installation process:Installing Root Mac
sudo dpkg -i rstudio-1.2.5033-amd64.deb
You may encounter some dependency problems that may cause your first try to install RStudio to fail, but this has an easy fix. Just run the following command and try again:
sudo apt -f install
Mac Root User
When the process finishes, you will have an RStudio shortcut in your Ubuntu app list, but you will also be able to start RStudio by typing rstudio in the command line.
Once you open RStudio, installing packages can be done in the exact same manner as with Windows or Mac OS. Either by typing
install.packages(c('dplyr','ggplot2'))
in the console or using the graphical interface shown in the video under the installing packages in R subsection of this tutorialConclusion
